Wellness Committee provides real world experiences for our students.

Hazel’s health and wellness campaign, Healthier Bodies Make Healthier Minds, has made great strides this school year. School staff and parents have worked together over the past eight months to create the committee, establish new school celebration and snack guidelines, offer the Walking Club, present a Health and Wellness meeting for parents and host an assembly for students.

The interactive assembly titled What’s Good to Eat, was hosted by Chef Celine from the Natural Gourmet Institute. Hazel parent and Wellness Committee member, Lisa Boymann, helped to bring the assembly to our school. (Take a moment to visit the previous What’s Good to Eat link to learn more about the assembly and see the assembly photo stream on Flickr). Continue reading →

Friends of PASSE Award: Nominations due by May 14th

All parents are invited to nominate West Orange staff members, (up to three nominations per parent), for the Friends of PASSE award.  This award is based solely on PARENT nominations.  Potential nominees include our nurses and other staff members who support those with medical needs, principals who create inclusive school atmospheres, child study team staff, classroom aides, teachers, etc.

Nomination forms are available in the Main Office, or may be downloaded from www.wopasse.org.  Nominations may be returned in a sealed envelope to the Main Office, clearly labeled “PASSE nomination,” brought to the next PASSE meeting on May 14, 2012 (West Orange High School Library Media Center, 51 Conforti Avenue at 7:00 p.m.) or the information emailed to Alexandra DeRonde.

Staff members who receive the most parent nominations in each school will receive the Friends of PASSE award. Last year our school was the most nominated school of the whole district. Four of Hazel’s staff received the award. Let’s do it again!

The annual Awards Night Meet and Greet has been arranged with Student Support Services and will be held, June 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Liberty Middle School cafeteria. All PASSE parents and West Orange Faculty and Staff are invited.

We just said Aloha to our most successful Book Fair ever!

Twenty four amazing parent volunteers and several Hazel teachers gave generously of their time and talents to transform the stage into Book Fair Island and help our students buy a record-breaking 1,544 books.  The talented Mr. Acevedo will be celebrating this feat with his feet — by walking on hot coals!  Date to be announced.

The profits from this event will be used to buy 2 SMART boards for the school, $400 worth of new books for the Library/Media Center, and over $1600 worth of new books and resources for classroom teachers and specialists.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this reading celebration a success! – Lisa Duke-Lees

The Executive Board: Why We NEED You. (And Soon!)

Parents on the newly elected Executive Board plan for the upcoming school year. Imagine the next school year without events and activities like the Teacher’s Welcome Back-to-School Breakfast, New Parent Tea, Fall Carnival, Fall Book Fair, Fall Fundraisers, Spirit Wear, Holiday Boutique, Spring Book Fair, Spring Fundraiser, Tricky Tray. Imagine no funding for class trips, assemblies, special guests, educational technology, cultural events, After School Programming, Rainbow Garden supplies, family nights, decorations, and basic classroom supplies.

There are seven (7) open positions on our Parent-Teacher Association’s Executive Board (EB) for the 2012-2013 school year. The Nominating Committee is ready to review candidates and make recommendations at the next PTA meeting on April 18th, 2012.  The general election is on May 16th, 2012.

Parents on the Executive Board work directly with our Principal to support and create opportunities for our school. Current and future PTA business is discussed, such as fund raising or the need for advocacy on an important issue. The EB also receives detailed school information through the monthly Principal’s Report. The EB plans and manages the PTA budget, which is an integral part of our work. This budget assists our school community to provide further opportunities to our students and teachers.

To learn more about the positions and the Executive Board visit the Executive Board page and download the position descriptions under ‘What We Do.’

You can nominate yourself or someone else (for more then one position).
