Hazel’s health and wellness campaign, Healthier Bodies Make Healthier Minds, has made great strides this school year. School staff and parents have worked together over the past eight months to create the committee, establish new school celebration and snack guidelines, offer the Walking Club, present a Health and Wellness meeting for parents and host an assembly for students.
The interactive assembly titled What’s Good to Eat, was hosted by Chef Celine from the Natural Gourmet Institute. Hazel parent and Wellness Committee member, Lisa Boymann, helped to bring the assembly to our school. (Take a moment to visit the previous What’s Good to Eat link to learn more about the assembly and see the assembly photo stream on Flickr). Continue reading →
Silent Peace March
Hazel students have been learning about famous African-Americans who contributed to our nation’s formation and history. We will conclude our month long activities by having our first ever silent peace march to learn about the power of non-violence in an effort to promote equality and peace. The march will be made in remembrance of the peaceful marches made famous by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This school-wide activity will take place on February, 29th at 9:10am. It will focus on protesting bullying and promoting peace and acceptance.
Our students have worked with their classroom teachers to create slogans and will work in art class to put these slogans on banners and posters to carry during the march. We need parent volunteers to walk with the children to ensure that they are safe and quite. The march will take approximately 15-20 minutes as we will march around our Hazel community. If you are available, please contact the main office at (973)669-5448 to sign up.
Dr. Suess’ Birthday & Read Across America Day
We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday during the week of February 27, 2012 and will kick off the week with an assembly program and activities all week. We are looking for parent volunteers to read to our classes on Friday, March 2, 2012. Please contact your child’s teacher or Ms. Sissman, our reading specialist at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a time for a reading.
